Southern Europe

Overview of Italy

意大利

The Italian Republic is located in southern Europe, including the Apennine Peninsula and islands such as Sicily and Sardinia. Italy has an area of approximately 301333 square kilometers and a population of approximately 58.99 million (2023 data). Italian is the main language, with some areas in the northwest and northeast using French, German, and Slovenian respectively.

The capital of Italy is Rome, which is the political, economic, cultural, and transportation center of Italy. The area of Rome is approximately 1285 square kilometers, with a population of approximately 28.6 million in the city center. The history of Rome can be traced back to 753 BC when it was founded. It was the birthplace of the ancient Roman Empire and served as the political center of the Mediterranean and Europe for 500 years.

Italy's economy mainly relies on agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Italy has developed agriculture, especially in specialty agricultural products such as wine and olive oil. The tourism industry is also an important economic pillar with rich historical and cultural heritage. Italy is still a fashion capital known for its clothing design and automobile manufacturing industry. However, Italy's population structure problem is relatively serious, and labor market reform is crucial for the economic outlook.

Italy is one of the four largest economies in Europe, with a total economic output of 2.16 trillion US dollars in 2023, ranking eighth globally. Italy's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will reach 2085.376 billion euros in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 0.9%. Although the economic growth rate has slowed down compared to 4% in 2022, it is higher than the government's expected 0.7%.

The economic structure of Italy is mainly based on the service industry, especially the tourism industry. The central region includes regions such as Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria, which account for approximately 22% of the country's total economy and have a per capita GDP slightly higher than the national average. The average wage level in Italy is in the upper middle range in Europe, at around 3720 euros (equivalent to 29600 yuan), but due to high taxes, the actual income of most people is between 1500-2000 euros (approximately 11000 to 16000 yuan).

Although Italy's total economic output and per capita GDP are at a relatively high level globally and in Europe, its economic growth is relatively slow, and its public debt accounts for a high proportion of GDP. These factors together constitute the complex economic profile of Italy.
